REFLECTIONS
Experience
Overall, I've learned to be able to compose and express using textual information and to be able to format text for effective communication from Task 1, to demonstrate the use of Grids, layouts and page flow and to apply the necessary skills and sensibilities for effective typographic communication and achieve good reading rhythm with memorability in Task 2, and developed my ability to construct a readable and legible font and design a font with consistent characteristics premised on research and analysis in Task 3. These were my learning goals, and I'm very grateful I manage to experience them all in this semester.
Observation
I realised that there was a significant improvement from Task 1 to Task 3, where I really took my time in refining details, sketches before I digitised. I think the exercises in Task 1 were really rushed, maybe because of the days we were in, but I could also feel that I didn't express my 4 words creatively as I wanted to, whereas in Task 3 I was quite happy with my font.
Findings
Findings
Throughout the tasks, I found
that a deep understanding of
typography principles created a sense of pride in me as a designer. Using the rules that I've learned, I understand now why certain rules are meant to be broken or bent, and why certain rules are meant to be the same. (for legibility of course!) Typography these days are often overlooked when you have much more cool design cousins in the background (Mixed Realities, Game Designs, 3D Modelling) and at times I found myself looking forward to more of that than to really focus on kernings and side bearings, but I found myself really feeling like I had some skin in the game, hungry to learn for more. Having my own font made me felt like a true designer, I am proud to say that I'm looking forward for my progress in Advanced Typography next! (Mr Vinod I will do my best, thank you)
